Today, I went to the theater to see Avengers Endgame for the 3rd time. Unfortunately, all of the 2D showings were either sold-out or not a convenient time for me to go, so I ended up seeing it in 3D. (I guess since it was my 3rd time, it made sense to watch it in 3D.)
For the most part, I don’t care either way about 3D. Certain movies really make it worth it, but more often than not, it doesn’t make that much of a difference to me. However, I know a lot of people get headaches or get dizzy when they watch 3D movies. This thought sent my mind down a rabbit hole that could only land in one logical place:
I had to invent the 2D GLASSES.
The idea is a pair of glasses that would allow you to see a 3D movie…but in 2D. Perfect for the person who likes paying the premium 3D movie price, but doesn’t want the headaches associated with watching a 3D movie!
I searched online to see if I was the only one smart enough to come up with this idea. And obviously, I was. So I got straight to work on my invention.
First things first, we have to understand how 3D movies work.
It’s actually pretty simple. 3D projectors simultaneously project 2 slightly different 2D images on top of each other. This is why, when you don’t wear the glasses at a 3D movie, there appear to be two overlapping images on the screen. The 3D glasses work their magic and make it so you can only see one of the 2D images in one eye and the other 2D image in the other eye. Then your brain does even more magic to mesh those images together and create a 3D image.
BONUS FACT: If you wear 3D glasses upside down, it will appear as if the foreground is further away than the background. Although, if you are prone to headaches in 3D movies already, I don’t recommend trying this.
My theory is this: if you take two pairs of 3D glasses and hold them both up to your face so that each eye is seeing through the left lens, you will only see one 2D image and your brain won’t have to do any extra work, thus no extra headaches. I tried this theory today, and it totally works! 3D movie, 2D image!
Naturally, after proving my theory right, I stole several pairs of 3D glasses from the theater and took them home to experiment. After hours of rigorous experimentation, I’ve brought my invention to life. And you can too, by following these simple instructions.
STEP 1
Gather your supplies. All you need is:
- 2 pairs of 3D glasses
- 1 pair of cheap sunglasses
- Some rubber bands
- A cutting tool that can cut through plastic
STEP 2
Pop out the lenses of the cheap sunglasses.
STEP 3
Cut the 3D glasses in half.
STEP 4
Cut off the sides of the 3D glasses.
STEP 5
Take the left lens from each pair and rubberband them to the sunglasses.
STEP 6
Enjoy your 2D movie!
If you want, you can stylize your 2D glasses by using different color rubber bands or cheap sunglasses! You can have all kinds of fun with this project!

Why don’t you wear those glasses to work?

Unfortunately, Fred, they don’t turn the real world 2-D. Although, I’d love to see a pair of glasses that do! Could be interesting!
