CHAPTER ONE: Lucas, the Janitor

The Year 2009

Lucas always enjoyed taking afternoon walks. It was nice to get outside for awhile, away from work. Everyday, it seemed, his job as a janitor at the local high school got worse and worse. He didn’t know how the students could possibly make such huge messes and vandalize so many things everyday! A few more days like the last couple of weeks and he was going to quit and move to Fiji. The daily walks helped him maintain his sanity.

As he walked, he breathed in deeply the smell of the freshly plowed corn field to his left and listened to the sound of children playing in the yards of the houses to his right. It was quite peaceful and exactly what he needed on this particularly stressful day.

BANG! BANG! BANG!

The sudden loud noises rang out like gunshots from a couple of blocks away. Concerned, Lucas quickly headed in the direction of the noises. Whatever this was, it could not be good.

From a distance, he could see the house where he thought the noises had come from. In front of the house, stood five people. High school students, from the looks of them. Oh great, he thought. Students with guns. Just what I needed today.

As he got closer, he could tell that the students seemed to be an odd group. There were two girls (who appeared to be rather normal), two boys who were wearing some sort of life-preservers, and one boy who wore a long purple trenchcoat and sunglasses with only one lense. The trenchcoat boy was frantically explaining something to the others as they all five piled into the cab of a Ford pickup truck with some sort of machinery on the hood.

They must have shot someone and now they are trying to flee the scene! Lucas thought, as he ran to try and stop them.

Unfortunately, he was too late. The truck peeled out and headed straight for the freshly plowed field. And now they’re going bogging! Those idiots! But then something peculiar happened. Just before the truck reached the field, it was engulfed in lightning. There were three flashes of light, each accompanied by a BANG!, as he had heard before, and on the third flash, the truck vanished!

Lucas stopped running and slowly walked to where the truck had disappeared. On the ground there were two streaks of mud left behind by the truck’s tires and nothing else.

“What the bogg is going on here?” he said aloud. Looking around suspiciously, he began to wonder if he should call the police. He reached for his phone, but froze as he air suddenly filled with the strong scent of gasoline and mud.

BANG! BANG! BANG!

The truck reappeared in the field about ten feet from where it had left, spun around, and headed straight for him. Before Lucas could react, the truck mowed him over, killing him instantly and burying his body in the mud.

The truck pulled over in front of the house where it had started. The group piled out.

“Bogg! You ran over that man!” cried Kori.

“I think he’s dead!” Kendra shouted, frantically.

“Bogg! I thought we were going to save our kids from something!” Taylor Marty asked.

“We were! And we did!” Bogg said, with a sly grin.

“What are you– talking about,” replied Taylor McFly, trying to hold back vomit from the site of the mangled and muddy body behind them. “I don’t get it.”

“In about 25 years,” Bogg explained. “That man was going to sell cocaine to your son…s.” He added the last ‘s’ with a glance from one Taylor to the other. “It was all a downward spiral from there, until the entirety of both of your families found themselves in jail! And now he never will. You’re welcome.”

“Oh my bogg!” Kendra said through tears. “So you killed him? He was an innocent janitor at the high school. There was no other answer?”

“Nope! Believe me, I tried everything,” said Bogg, “I concocted a plan to try to get him to quit and move far away so that he would never even meet your kids. I’ve been using the time machine to vandalize and trash the school every day for weeks. While he is cleaning one hallway, I’ve been in all the others at the same time just destroying them. He wouldn’t budge! Loves his job too much! So this was Plan B.”

“Plan B?!” Kori shouted. The girls were clearly very shaken up by this. “You went straight from annoying him to running him down with your truck?!”

“And why did you have to bring us along anyway!” Kendra shrieked. “Now we’re co-conspirators! What is wrong with you?!”

“Ladies,” Taylor Marty interjected, seeing that Bogg was at a loss for words. “Bogg did us a favor. Maybe not in the most conventional way… But a favor, nonetheless!”

“You’re okay with this!?” Kori growled at him.

“What about you!?” Kendra snapped at Taylor McFly.

“Well… Bogg is pretty smart…” Taylor McFly said, timidly. “And he did save our future children.”

“Future children!” Kendra said, as her eyes turned hatefully black. “Not with us!”

Kendra and Kori ran away in tears.

“Well that was a short relationship…” Taylor Marty said.

“I guess you won’t be having those kids that I just saved anymore.” Bogg said with regret. “What a waste of time!”

The Taylors rolled their eyes at each other and said farewell. They were anxious to get home and see what else their time-traveling trip to one year ago had screwed up in their lives. The three parted ways, leaving the body of Lucas the janitor to rot in the mud.
